LA RIPA VARIATIONS
Patricia Treib
August 2022
During the residency at La Ripa, Patricia Treib created gouache and egg tempera paintings, as well as oil on paper works.
The study of three objects found near the farmhouse—an unidentified mineral, a shard of an antique ceramic plate, and a fig leaf—includes four small-format oil paintings on paper. The objects are observed in relation to one another, placed in different positions, and illuminated at various times of day. They function as paintings in themselves, while also serving as preparatory studies for a large-format canvas work.
The group of works also includes two en plein air gouache and egg tempera paintings on paper depicting the surrounding landscape.
A series of four oil on paper abstractions is based on the observation of a vintage 1940s Vogue sewing pattern envelope illustrating various dress sleeves.
Another series of four oil on paper works is inspired by ancient fragments found in Buccino (SA), remnants of an earthquake that occurred between the mid and third quarter of the 1st century A.D
