GIUDIZIO UNIVERSALEMarino Melarangelo
21.12.2025 – 30.03.2026
Conceived as a tribute to Studioli’s tenth anniversary, Giudizio Universale brings together a series of ink drawings on paper in which Marino Melarangelo envisions a neo-baroque amusement park of machines, populated by stories and characters that have passed through Studioli’s history over the years.
An eight-meter-long roller coaster winds through the space, functioning simultaneously as a narrative device and as the project’s architectural backbone. A sequence of mirrored labyrinths, a Tagadà ride with suspended figures, an Egyptian haunted house, and a group of erotic machines installed in a veranda-cabin all gaze with ironic fascination at contemporary artificial intelligence technologies. The artist appropriates their visual grammars only to distort and transcend them, reaffirming a form of intelligence rooted in the hand, the imagination, and cultural memory.
Melarangelo’s imaginary draws on the history of classical Italian art: from Scamozzi, Piranesi, and the architects of the seventeenth century to Giulio Romano and the Galli da Bibbiena, up to the visionary spaces of La Scarzuola; from the literary excess of Tommaso Landolfi to the grotesque and carnivalesque worlds of James Ensor. Baroque festivities, ephemeral architectures, and celebratory machines re-emerge as tools for constructing unstable spaces of illusion and pleasure.
